Second time at O'Hare this year — and the alert gives us a window: Terminal 5, June 17, 5:50 to 9:30 a.m. That's actually specific, which I'll give them credit for. It is specific — and notice we're hearing about it on the 26th. The traveler arrived on the 17th. Nine days for a measles exposure notice on a window that's already nine days in the rearview is not a head start. Right, and that's the parent question, Cassidy — if I was at Terminal 5 that Wednesday morning, the symptom clock has basically already run. The notice tells me when I was exposed, not what I'm supposed to do with that on a Friday. Incubation runs roughly seven to twenty-one days. So someone exposed June 17 could be symptomatic right now, today, and an alert landing this late catches them after they've already gone to work, to school, to the grocery store. The person is an out-of-state resident who was traveling internationally, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) said. The person traveled on one of the shuttle trains from Concourse C to the International Arrivals Building, and was in the baggage claim area between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m.

That's specific — and it's specific about when the sick person was there. But for a parent, I still need the watch window. If my kid was in that baggage claim at 9 a.m., when do I start counting? The advisory tells me where the virus was — it doesn't tell me what to do tomorrow morning. Right, and the math you're missing is on VDH's side, not yours. Measles incubation runs roughly seven to twenty-one days. So if you were there June 17th, you watch through about July 8th. That's the number they should be printing next to the times. And notice the same date keeps coming up. June 17th at Dulles — June 17th at O'Hare, which we just hit. Two major international gateways, same day. You're watching an importation pattern move through the system. Airport exposure alerts drop pretty regularly during outbreak season — but how often do they actually seed something in the community? What has to go right, epidemiologically speaking, for a terminal or flight exposure to actually become an outbreak? A few things have to line up, and measles does not give you much margin. The King County alert about the Canadian traveler at Sea-Tac came eleven days after the March 9th exposure — right at the edge of the incubation window — so any secondary cases could already have been incubating before the alert went out. That eleven-day gap at Sea-Tac is striking — is that detection lag actually the weak point in the chain, or does it mostly come down to the vaccination rate in the destination community? Honestly, it's both, and they feed into each other. A detection lag becomes dangerous when there's an under-vaccinated pocket for the virus to land in.
