The Fever’s home-court race just ran straight into the Lynx wall. Here’s how we got here: Indiana’s playoff berth is already secure, so this is about earning the best path through the bracket. Before this latest turn, the Fever were still live in the seeding race. Home court was within reach, but far from locked up, and they were stuck in that tight middle pack rather than safely in the top four. This is Indiana Fever Daily Podcast — and tonight, we find out if that path stays open. Sports Illustrated, with Lindsay Burke:
Following their disastrous 93-77 loss to the Washington Mystics on Sunday afternoon, the Indiana Fever now see themselves staring down fifth place with a chance to lock in first round home-court advantage slipping away. In a game that saw their worst first half performance of the season after trailing by as many as 26 points, the pressure remains high, at least, so it may seem to most people outside of the organization.
I like Caitlin calling Minnesota an opportunity, because after getting buried by 26 in the first half against Washington, it better feel like something other than a funeral march. That seeding race tightened fast. The 93-77 loss dropped Indiana to fifth, and now the league-leading Lynx are standing in the way. Clark wants two great games heading into the postseason. Fine. Start by looking like a team that remembers the opening tip counts. “Stay levelheaded” only helps if it leads to cleaner possessions and stops. Minnesota isn’t grading Indiana on optimism. From Anthony Miller at Heavy.com:
Clark has been dealing with a back injury over the last two months, which has kept her on the injury report. With the Fever releasing their latest injury report, the hope is that she will continue to feel better and play.
Caitlin Clark is probable with that back issue, which is reassuring until you remember it’s been following her for two months. Probable doesn’t mean she’ll feel great against Minnesota. Indiana needs the full version of her, not just 25 points on 20 shots like Sunday. The Fever topped 20 in only one quarter against Washington. A compromised back can show up in her pace, her passing angles — all of it. She called this Lynx matchup an opportunity in the piece we just heard, and I love that mindset. But manage the game like she’s carrying a back issue — not like a probable tag makes her invincible. Also, Damiris Dantas is out. That matters against Minnesota’s size, especially after Indiana gave up a 21-point, 14-rebound game to Kiki Iriafen. Clark’s headline doesn’t make the depth chart any healthier. Bleacher Report, with Doric Sam:
The Indiana Fever had their three-game win streak snapped on Sunday with a 93-77 loss to the Washington Mystics. Fever star guard Catilin Clark had a game-high 25 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome Mystics star Kiki Iriafen's 21-point, 14-rebound double-double.
Caitlin Clark’s 25 looks fine until you get to 34-19 after one, no lead all afternoon, and a 26-point hole at Gainbridge. It was a team loss, not a star-player stat line. Kiki Iriafen goes 21 and 14, Shakira Austin goes 20 and 10, and Indiana’s frontcourt gets pushed around in its own building. Forty-one points and 24 boards from those two? Come on. Makayla Timpson gave them 13 and seven, but the rotation never found enough resistance. Sophie Cunningham had seven minutes with no points, rebounds, or assists. There was no bench lift coming. Kelsey Mitchell hitting 800 career threes — sixth player in WNBA history — should’ve been a great little home-floor moment. Instead, it got buried under a 93-77 faceplant. Minnesota is a brutal place to go looking for a reset. Sporting News, with Rodney Knuppel:
Aliyah Boston was called for her fourth foul while challenging Shakira Austin’s shot with 6:35 remaining in the third quarter Sunday. White immediately used her coach’s challenge, hoping replay would show Boston had made a legal defensive play. Officials reviewed the sequence and allowed the foul to stand.
Boston gets her fourth with 6:35 left in the third, White burns the challenge, and replay lets it stand? Then Aliyah plays 19 minutes while Kiki Iriafen goes for 21 and 14. That sequence changed the whole paint. White said officials told her Boston hit Shakira Austin on the arm, but Indiana’s angles didn’t show it. Once the challenge is gone, White has to protect Boston from a fifth, and the rotation gets very small, very quickly. And Austin still scored 20. Washington got 41 from those two frontcourt players while Indiana’s best interior defender was stuck doing foul math on the bench. The call is debatable, but the response has to be better tonight. Minnesota’s frontcourt will test Boston early, and with Damiris Dantas out, Indiana can’t afford another foul-trouble spiral. Sporting News, with David Suggs:
The deck of postseason-bound teams has been the same for the better part of a month. Their order changes by the day, however; every spot in the eight-team bracket is up for grabs, with some positions proving especially contentious.
The standings have the Fever at 27-15 and sitting fifth. Atlanta is 28-14 in fourth, Vegas is 29-13 in third — so yeah, facing the 32-10 Lynx tonight is a brutal way to start climbing. Sporting News has all eight playoff spots still moving. Indiana is only one game behind the Dream, but they need results — not another 25-point individual line in a loss. They spotted Washington 26 in the first half, and now the league leader is across the floor. Fine. Defend the paint, value every possession, and make Minnesota feel this game. Minnesota needs to hold off Golden State for the one-seed, while Indiana is chasing Atlanta and Las Vegas. Both teams have plenty to play for, and the Fever’s margin for another bad half is microscopic.
