Kelsey Mitchell made history, and Indiana still left Dallas with a loss. So where did this one get away? If you're just joining us, here's the short version: Indiana has to prove it can hold playoff position through a tougher closing stretch. The offense can surge; we've seen that. ESPN's remaining-schedule look had five of Indiana's final eight games against teams at .500 or better, including two late matchups with Minnesota. That comes after a five-game win streak pushed the Fever deeper into the seeding race. This is Indiana Fever Daily Podcast. Mitchell went nuclear, Dallas got desperate, and now we've got to figure out why a game Indiana had right there slipped away. Thirty-seven from Kelsey Mitchell. A new WNBA record for consecutive 20-point games. And they lose 91-85. I'm still sitting with that. If this story matters to you — Fever contender consistency test — hit follow. We'll be back on it soon. Here's ESPN:
DALLAS -- — Arike Ogunbowale scored a season-high 32 points, Jessica Shepard added a career-best 26 and the Dallas Wings beat Indiana 91-85 on Thursday night, ending the Fever's five-game winning streak. Caitlin Clark had 10 points and nine assists and Paige Bueckers finished with 13 points and eight assists on a rough shooting night for both former No. 1 overall picks six days after each scored 29 in the Fever's 98-87 victory.
Kelsey Mitchell put up 37, hit all 15 free throws, broke the WNBA record with a 21st straight 20-point game—and Indiana still lost by six. That one hurts. This is that contender-consistency test again. Dallas snapped the five-game streak while Mitchell made history. Indiana gave up 24 in the second, 24 in the third, then 25 in the fourth. They never stopped the leak. Dallas was playing like an eighth seed with its season on the line. Arike got 32. Jessica Shepard had a career-best 26, and Kuier sent back seven shots. Indiana let that desperation set the tone. Clark's nine assists matter; she kept creating through a 4-for-15 night. But when she and Paige Bueckers combine to shoot 9-for-31 six days after both scored 29, that's an adjustment you study—not a reason to panic about one player. Heather Burns, Cydney Henderson, writing in USA TODAY:
Thursday's matchup in Dallas between the Wings and Indiana Fever was a must-win for the home team, who are clinging to the eighth and final WNBA playoff spot after dropping seven of their last 10 games amid a string of injuries. The Wings came out with a level of desperation in their 91-85 win over the Fever on Thursday, Aug. 20 at the American Airlines Center to snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 21-16 on the season.
Lexi Hull saying Dallas “wanted it more” is brutal, because Dallas had lost seven of 10 and was hanging onto the eight seed. They treated it like their season was on the line. Indiana came in riding five straight and got punched in the mouth. We should be careful with that quote. Dallas was desperate, yes, but in a 91-85 game, a 24-13 team with seeding ambitions can't let Dallas' desperation be the difference. Indiana got enough offense from Kelsey Mitchell to win this. Mitchell put up 37 and extended the WNBA record for consecutive 20-point games—and they still left Dallas with an L. You don't get many nights when somebody makes league history and it still isn't enough. That's a brutal way for it to end. Here's the specific concern: Clark had nine assists despite shooting 4-for-15, so Indiana still found some creation. But Dallas could let her distribute, and Mitchell's 37 still didn't get them over the line. The offense needed a cleaner second answer. From Hawk Central:
Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever continued their 2026 WNBA regular season with a 91-85 loss to the Dallas Wings on Thursday, Aug. 20. Clark, a former Iowa women's basketball star, and the Fever are 24-13 after the first 37 games of the regular season.
Clark gave Indiana nine assists in 34 minutes, so the floor game was there. But 4-for-15, including 2-for-8 from three, meant Dallas could crowd the passing lanes because the pull-up threat never fully arrived. Kelsey Mitchell puts up 37, Clark has only three turnovers, and they still score 85. That's where I'm stuck: when Clark's shot goes cold, the offense can't turn into ‘Mitchell, please save us’ for 40 minutes. The response comes fast: New York on Aug. 22, then Chicago the next night. You can survive a 10-point, nine-assist line. Carrying a 4-for-15 night into a back-to-back is where it becomes a road-trip problem. Have feedback, story ideas, or a correction?
