Clark and the Eastern Conference-leading Indiana Fever (17-10), who are riding a three-game winning streak, return from the All-Star break with a game Tuesday in Seattle (6-23), which has lost six in a row and is in last place.
Okay, break's over. Fever come out of Chicago at 17-10, on a three-game winning streak, and the schedule gives us Seattle: 6-23, last place, six straight losses. I'll take that soft landing. And it's the third and final meeting with the Storm. Indiana walks in as the Eastern Conference leader. If we're getting 'back to basketball,' this is the game to do it. And watch Dominique Malonga — 20 years old, 16.3 and 8.5 for Seattle, back from a concussion that cost her eight games. Bad Storm team, legit young center. Boston's got work tonight. Nice footnote there, too — Clark missed this game as a rookie last year because she was hurt, so those 17 points Saturday were actually her first real All-Star run as a pro. That's why she's calling it unique. Mitchell dropped 28 for Team Coop! Game-high. Tonight against Seattle is the perfect chance to keep it rolling. Grant Young, writing in Sports Illustrated:
Of the eight teams that are currently in place to make the playoffs, the Fever have the second-hardest schedule for the rest of the regular season. Their upcoming opponents have a.527 winning percentage. The only top-eight team with a tougher road for the rest of the regular season is the Minnesota Lynx, who have a.555 average opponent winning percentage.
Okay, here's the number I actually wanted — Indiana's 17-10, the fifth seed if the season ended today, and their remaining schedule is the second-toughest of any playoff team. Those opponents are winning at a .527 clip. And that's what matters coming out of the break. This contender push goes straight through one of the hardest remaining schedules among the top eight. And Minnesota's a huge part of that — three times! August 2 in Minnesota, then back-to-back to close the regular season on September 22 and 24. That puts the seeding fight right in the final week. Eight of the final 17 are against current top-six teams. We've asked all season whether the offense can outrun the defense. This is the stretch that answers it. Only Minnesota's got it worse at .555. So ESPN's model can have Indiana first to win it all, cool — but now we know exactly what they'll have to get through. It's ugly. For a fifth seed with two more cracks apiece at Dallas and New York? That's a buy signal, Joey. This roster's got every reason to add before August 2, not stand pat. This one's from CBS Sports:
But what does Clark want? Fair and accurate coverage that's focused on the actual game and not contrived controversies. To put on a show for the fans. And, most of all, a championship.
She said that walking out of the locker room, she shouldn't have to be afraid of what the conversation's gonna be. She called it 'emotionally exhausting' and 'draining,' said it makes your shoulders tense. Those are Clark's own words to CBS Sports. I'm not reading between the lines. Two days before Seattle, she's telling you exactly where her head is. She wants fair coverage of the actual game and a championship — in that order. And here's what undercuts the whole 'back to basketball' wish — she's one technical foul from an automatic suspension. The Storm game tips tonight, and the refs don't care that the All-Star break happened. Right. The fastest way for the conversation to become about Clark again is a seventh tech in a game she doesn't finish. A twenty-minute scrum, with her joking about how long it is. Then she spends the rest of the weekend talking anyway — Obama comes up, along with all the sponsor and StudBudz stuff. Everybody wants a piece, and she just wants to hoop. There's a real tension here, too. The team wants the noise to die down, and there's still a story around this roster without a real answer. We can't ignore either one. Mitchell delivered one of the best performances of the night while playing alongside Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese on Team Coop. The first-time All-Star starter poured in a game-high 28 points, shooting 11-of-19 from the field while adding four rebounds, two assists and five steals.
Twenty-eight points, 11-of-19, and five steals in the All-Star Game — and Angel Reese jumps into the comments and calls Kelsey Mitchell a 'bucket getter.' That label's finally coming from outside the building. She leads everyone in scoring and still doesn't get MVP because Team Coop loses 129-122. The trophy went to the winning side, but people noticed what she did anyway. And that's Angel Reese saying it — she's got her own spotlight, and she was right there on the same court watching Kelsey heat up. When a star that big says 'that girl,' the league's paying attention. It comes right as the real schedule resumes, too. The production's been there. Now it has to show up again tonight in Seattle.
