Ebola Response Strains as DRC Spread Reaches Kisangani (July 15, 2026)

WHO said something today that changes the shape of this outbreak — the source of most new cases is now a mystery to the people tracking it. If you're just joining us, the DRC declared a Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in Ituri on May 15, and it's since widened across multiple provinces. Before today, AP reported nearly 2,000 confirmed cases, including 702 deaths, with suspected cases in additional provinces — Kisangani among them. The response has been fighting on other fronts too: unpaid-worker strikes, infrastructure gaps, rebel threats, misinformation. This is Ebola Watch. Today — Kisangani stops being a maybe, and WHO says it can’t identify where most new cases are starting. Cera, start with that first one. Africanews is tracking this. A WHO official now says the source of the majority of new cases is unknown. That takes us past a simple rising case count — it means the contact-tracing chains have broken down, and the virus is moving through routes nobody's watching. So the blind spot is right in the center now. If WHO can't tell you where most cases are coming from, what happens to the whole idea that this thing is geographically contained? The containment assumption rests on being able to follow a chain from case to contact. Once the majority of those chains go dark, the visible outbreak is only part of the problem — and the hidden one is guesswork. And there's an American humanitarian worker in Bunia this all started around. If WHO can't trace where infections are starting, the exposure risk for someone in the field just got harder to quantify. You don't want that number getting fuzzier. This one comes via Mwangi Maina at The Eastleigh Voice. A few days back, two cases in Kisangani were still awaiting validation. Today they're confirmed — and Kisangani matters because it sits on the Congo River, a road and air junction for the whole region. So this is the one I've been nervous about. Five provinces was already a lot, but a case count spreading is different from the virus reaching a place people move through. Cera — does a hub like Kisangani change the international-spread math? Right — coming straight off that WHO admission that most new cases have no known source. So we can't trace where it's coming from, and now it's landed at a place designed to send people everywhere. Which is why cross-border coordination between Kinshasa and Kampala has to move from diplomacy into daily operations. When the chains are invisible, the borders become the surveillance net. And for anyone with someone working in the field out there — a hub case doesn't mean pack your bags today, but it does mean the 'it's contained to the east' line got a lot weaker overnight. So on the same day Kisangani goes from question mark to confirmed transport hub, WHO drops a target product profile for a Bundibugyo vaccine. Cera, help me — this is a specs document, right? Not a dose in a fridge somewhere. Exactly right. A target product profile is the formal starting gun — it tells developers and regulators the minimum a Bundibugyo vaccine has to clear on efficacy, dosing, storage, all of it. It's dated July 14, tied directly to this year's public health emergency declaration. Right, so we're writing the blueprint for a vaccine that doesn't exist yet, in the same rundown where WHO admits it can't trace where most cases are coming from. Those two clocks are not running at the same speed. They're not — but notice what the profile emphasizes: storage, stability, programmatic suitability for resource-constrained settings. Whoever wrote this was thinking about a nurse in Butembo, not a freezer in Geneva. The last mile is in the document from page one. That I'll take. If they're specifying that it can survive the field before it exists, at least the equity problem isn't an afterthought this time.
