Angel City gets to see whether that KC spark shows up in Houston, and the Dash already know which flank they're coming after. I'm Joey, this is Angel City Daily. We’ve got Houston voices previewing the match, a three-back shape that hasn’t really been road-tested yet, and a table that keeps getting more interesting. We’re pulling the Berkely and Gautrat presser, then looking at the Patterson-Faasse flank combo Houston used to open the scoring against San Diego, and whether that Martin center-back experiment still holds up away from home. I’ve been saying Houston was a real threat for two days. Today we find out if that was me being paranoid or just early. Bayou City Soccer writes:
Yeah, I think with a quick turnaround, we're just um focusing on making sure everybody is rested, ready to go for this game. Um obviously it's been a very long month of games, so um adjustments are small in between games and just focusing on what we can fix in the little amount of time.
The Houston name that comes out of the presser is Ally Prisock, and she’s basically saying the same thing Bayou City Soccer wrote down: the adjustments between games have been small because there’s just no time. If your back line is admitting it’s working on fumes, that’s the kind of spot where Angel City can hit them with those KC-style flank combinations again. I said Houston was a real threat two days ago, and I’m sticking with it. But “we can’t control the amount of games we have, focusing one game at a time” is exactly what a tired team says when it’s running out of answers. That’s coping, not a plan. Prisock also made it clear they want this one specifically, and with two games left before the break, Houston needs something from it. Tired doesn’t mean checked out. That’s why that Patterson-right, Faasse-connecting shape from the KC recap matters — they found it when they were probably fresher than they are now. Okay, so Angel City just got a needed win over Kansas City, but Houston’s a different kind of problem. What exactly is the matchup issue here, and does any of that recent tactical stretch actually travel on the road? Houston is tricky for a few reasons. They showed their bite right away — 17th minute, Avery Patterson driving down the right, Kate Faasse linking in the box, and rookie Kat Rader, who’s up to four goals now, dribbling around the keeper to finish. That right-side delivery into the box is a real pattern for them. Then Maggie Graham gets the winner, per the Houston Dynamo match report, so the production is spread out. For ACFC, the piece that’s been clicking is Gisele Thompson doing double duty — she scored and set up Kennedy Fuller’s winner against Kansas City — so that left-back-to-midfield lane has been the engine. The question at Shell Energy is whether that survives a third match in seven days. So Houston just finished the homestand with four points — does ACFC have anything recent that says they can actually flip this on the road against a team riding that kind of home momentum? The biggest data point is from earlier this season: Angel City already beat Houston at home, so we know the matchup can work. But per Angels on Parade’s preview, the real issue now is whether ACFC can finish the last stretch before the summer break strong, because doing that with almost no margin is what separates a middle-of-the-pack season from an actual playoff push. This one's from National Women's Soccer League:
starts with the recognition from Martin here, understanding the high line left side of your screen. That is a lot of green grass that you can run into. And when Thompson is in this situation, she's just so good, so decisive. That touch right there creates a little bit of separation and notice how quickly she sets her feet.
The clips line up with what Straus said at the presser: three-back, Le Gear in her second straight start next to Borges, and the number 10 role settled in for the center trio. So this isn’t a one-week look anymore — it’s a system getting stress-tested on purpose. And Izzy Rodriguez still set the all-time NWSL assist record from the other side of that game. Angel City won 2-1 against a team producing historically efficient playmaking, so yeah, that result deserves respect, even with the margin that tight. Le Gear covering ground in that central lane is exactly the thing that has to travel to Houston — or fall apart. Patterson scored down the right in the 17th minute against San Diego, and if Le Gear steps and loses her shape, Kate Faasse is already getting in behind. Here's Mike Kuhn at KC Soccer Journal:
The Kansas City Current’s 2026 record dropped back to.500 at 5-5 with a 2-1 loss in Los Angeles last night to Angel City FC. Here are the stats and milestones from the game.
The KC recap is out, and the number that jumps at you is Izzy Rodriguez’s 13th all-time assist in league play — record-breaking production on the losing side. Angel City still won 2-1 against a team that was generating historic playmaking. That’s the kind of result Straus earned Wednesday night. And KC drops back to .500 at 5-5, so the table tightens up a little more above them. The teams Angel City needs to stay ahead of aren’t running away, which means this win moved the standings, not just the highlight reel. The flip side of that Rodriguez record is Angel City still gave up enough chances for a historic playmaker to find her milestone. You can win 2-1 and still have questions about how open you were willing to be at home. From Angel City Football Club:
