Macario's coming to BMO, and Angel City is showing up shorthanded — Niehues is out for two matches before this rivalry even starts. Welcome to the Angel City Daily Fancast. We've got a SoCal derby on deck, a suspension that changes the lineup math, and some broadcast news that actually matters. Losing Niehues for two heading into San Diego is a real tactical problem. That is not a little depth-chart note. And Macario on the other side? Yeah, that makes this derby feel a lot bigger than the standings do right now. From Karan Lodha at Angel City Football Club:
True to its name, San Diego (5-3-0) made waves when it announced the signing of forward Catarina Macario in March. The U.S. Women’s National Team attacker had spent the previous three seasons with Chelsea FC Women before signing with her hometown club. Macario is now part of a talented offensive lineup that also features midfielder Lia Godfrey, who is tied for third in the NWSL with four goals scored.
San Diego comes to BMO on Saturday at five-and-three, with Catarina Macario leading an attack that's been one of the league's more dangerous groups this year. After that Utah loss, Angel City needs a result at home. And that Utah loss hurts even more when you look at the shot count — ACFC outshot them nine to five and still got nothing out of it. Down a player and still the better team on the ball? That's a rough way to lose three points. The Taylor Suarez storyline is real, though. First full ninety as a pro, and Straus saying she might've been the best player on the pitch — that's a name to keep right in front of us as this roster settles. DiDi Haracic coming back to BMO as the opposing keeper is a fun subplot, sure, but I'm more worried about Lia Godfrey. Tied for third in the league in goals from midfield is a serious headache for any defense. Here's Yahoo Sports:
According to the NWSL news release on the suspensions, “… the Disciplinary Committee determined that both incidents rose to the level of a violation of Section 12.4.11, ‘Major Game Misconduct,’ of the League Operations Manual. As a result, each player has been issued an additional one-match suspension, increasing their total suspensions to two matches.”
Maiara Niehues gets an additional one-game ban on top of the red card suspension, so that's two matches total for striking a Utah Royals player after the whistle. That's a decision, not some gray-area judgment call. I get the frustration in the moment — you're trying to protect a teammate — but you cannot make the league's job that easy. Angel City lost the game, and now they're short a midfielder in the middle of the schedule. Two matches out for Niehues is the part that stings tactically. She's a starter, and whoever takes those minutes has to keep the shape in central midfield — this roster does not have automatic depth there. Sports Video Group writes:
Angel City Football Club (ACFC) and Victory+ have announced a regional broadcast partnership bringing live match coverage to fans across the greater Los Angeles area on the free streaming platform. The partnership begins Wednesday, May 20 with ACFC’s match against the Kansas City Current at BMO Stadium.
Angel City and Victory+ are making it official — six regional broadcasts this season, free streaming, starting May 20 against Kansas City Current at BMO. Saskia Webber in the booth is a solid get. Free access, local call, former USWNT player on color — that's exactly what a flagship club should be doing. More eyes on the product, fewer excuses not to watch. The caveat I'd add is simple: six games is six games. That's not saturation coverage. It's a start, and the real question is whether the soccer on screen keeps those new viewers coming back. If something from today's episode sent you down a rabbit hole, you'll find links to every story in the show notes. Take a look and spend a little more time with the ones that caught your ear.
That's Angel City Daily Fancast for today. This is a Lantern Podcast.
